In its Environmental Policy, Subaru of America (SOA) commits to conserving and protecting
natural resources. Its Environmental Management System (EMS) is part of that commitment,
which now has been audited and recommended for ISO 14001 certification. (Read the

Environmental efforts made by SOA reflect an understanding of our responsibility
to citizens of the world to integrate sound environmental practices in all business
decisions. The Subaru EMS model reflects the never-ending nature of these efforts.

In 1992, the International Earth Summit focused on worldwide environmental issues
such as global warming, water pollution, depletion of the ozone layer, destruction
of the rain forests and more. This conference led to several environmental directives,
some eventually becoming ISO 14001 – a standard for an organization’s
Environmental Management System (EMS).
The International Organization for Standardization began operations in 1947 to facilitate
the international coordination and unification of industrial standards. “ISO”
(pronounced “eye-soh”) is derived from the Greek word for “equal.”
“14001” is one of the 14000 family of ISO standards, which concern environmental
management. These standards are designed to apply to any organization, regardless
of size or product.
ISO 14001 calls for minimizing harmful effects to the environment and for continued
improvement in that endeavor.
